Lush nature surrounding the picturesque village of Faial da Terra, in São Miguel, Azores.

7. Faial da Terra Village

Faial da Terra is another small village in the southeast of São Miguel Island that offers many interesting tourist attractions. Like the village of Provação, Faial da Terra is highly regarded by locals and was a recommendation from island residents—and we couldn't be more grateful!

This village is known for its cliffs, lush vegetation, and the incredible Salto do Prego waterfall. Additionally, Faial da Terra is home to the abandoned village of Sanguinho, an essential stop for those who want to connect directly with the history of São Miguel.

Faial da Terra is also well-known among hiking enthusiasts as it is part of some important and highly recommended trails, such as the PRC09 SMI Trail or the Salto do Prego and Salto do Carragão Waterfall Trail. We talk in more detail about these trails in the section about Salto do Prego.

In addition to everything mentioned above, Faial da Terra itself also boasts some tourist attractions, such as the Church of Nossa Senhora da Graça and the Hermitage of Nossa Senhora de Lourdes, the Ermida viewpoint, the Water Mills, and the historic whaling port.

Lastly, it's worth noting that in Faial da Terra, you can experience one of the island's most special activities, geared towards the most adventurous people: paragliding off the Faial cliff. Would you dare?

On the other hand, if you're looking for a more relaxed plan and visit the island in August, some locals recommended attending an event called Faial da Terra Blues, three days of music, traditional cuisine, and activities that usually take place in early August. We've been lucky enough to attend and believe it's absolutely worth it. Check the dates for this year's event, and if it coincides with your trip, don't hesitate!
