3. Vila Franca do Campo Islet

The Vila Franca do Campo Islet is a little slice of natural paradise situated on the south coast of São Miguel Island. It's just 1 km off the coast of the town of Vila Franca do Campo. Since 2008, the islet has been part of the São Miguel Island Natural Park, a protected area, although it was declared a Natural Reserve many years ago to ensure its preservation.

The islet is the emergent part of a small underwater volcano that originated 4,000 years ago. Its current shape is the result of marine erosion on the volcanic cone. The edges of the crater form two islets: the small islet or "Ilhéu Pequenino" and the large islet or "Ilhéu Grande," and this crater forms a natural pool where people can swim.

The Islet isn't vast (about 95 hectares), so it's possible to explore it in a short amount of time.

To get to the Vila Franca Islet, you can take the official boats that depart from Vila Franca marina. Tickets can be purchased at the sales point located at the harbor. During peak season, we recommend buying tickets early as long queues can form, especially in good weather.

Our favorite and highly recommended option firsthand is this Whale Watching + Vila Franca Islet activity. In this case, you won't disembark on the Islet but rather visit it from the boat used for whale watching. You also have the option to book this same activity with transfers from Ponta Delgada.

Another way to visit the Vila Franca Islet is with this Tour of the Vila Franca Islet. In this case, you will disembark on the Islet and can enjoy its natural pool for about 3 hours. After that time, the boat will take you back to Vila Franca.

If you decide to visit the Islet, you can spend a few hours sunbathing, swimming in the crater, or simply enjoying the uniqueness of this marvel. Just keep in mind that the water is very cold, and if it's not sunny, we recommend saving it for another day. It's also important to note that there are no services on the islet, so it's necessary to bring enough water and food.
