1. Lagoa das Furnas
(Furnas Lagoon)
Lagoa das Furnas (Furnas Lagoon) is a must-visit spot on São Miguel Island. In fact, the entire Furnas area is one of the main attractions of the island, with Lagoa das Furnas being one of the highlights.
This lagoon is of great interest from a volcanic, thermal, and of course, scenic perspective. Lagoa das Furnas is located in an ancient crater of the Furnas volcano, surrounded by numerous volcanic manifestations: boiling water calderas, fumaroles, sulfur springs, as well as abundant vegetation. The area of the calderas and fumaroles of Furnas, on the northern shore of the lagoon, is the perfect place to enjoy this incredible location.
On the other hand, on the southern side of Lagoa das Furnas, there are also other related points of interest, such as the Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Vitórias and the Furnas Monitoring and Research Center, located right here.
One way to explore Lagoa das Furnas and its surroundings is with this guided bike tour around the lagoon, which lasts about 3 hours. Whenever we get the chance, we love discovering the places we visit on two wheels, especially if it's a nature-filled spot. If you're like us, don't hesitate!
By the way, aren't you surprised by the green color of the lagoon? This color is due to environmental issues. Since there are many pastures in the surroundings, organic matter has accumulated at the bottom of the lagoon, resulting in excessive nutrient enrichment, which gives the water its color. In fact, something you should know is that the lagoon is not suitable for swimming, unlike the vast majority on the island.
But just because you can't swim doesn't mean you can't enjoy the wonderful landscape that this lagoon offers. Some of the best spots to observe it are the area of fumaroles and calderas or the Pico do Ferro Viewpoint, which is right above the lagoon.
