9. Grota do Inferno or Boca do Inferno Viewpoint
The Grota do Inferno Viewpoint (or Boca do Inferno) is one of the essential viewpoints to visit on São Miguel Island. This viewpoint offers an impressive panoramic view of the Lagoa das Sete Cidades, the famous two-colored volcanic caldera that dominates the western area of the island.
The Grota do Inferno Viewpoint is located at the top of a cliff, giving it a special allure, and it offers truly breathtaking views. But it's not just the Lagoa das Sete Cidades that you can appreciate; from this viewpoint, you can also see the Lagoa do Canario and much of the Serra Devassa. Additionally, to reach the viewpoint, you need to follow a linear trail with several viewpoints along the way where you can enjoy spectacular landscapes of pristine nature.
This linear trail is approximately 1.2 km long (2.4 km round trip) and starts from the parking lot of the Lagoa do Canario, leading to the Grota do Inferno Viewpoint, passing by the Lagoa do Canario at the beginning. It's important to note that, being on a cliff, this trail has a considerable incline over a short distance (107 meters elevation gain in 1.2 km), although it's not a problem for anyone without physical health issues, and we assure you it's worth it.
