6. Pico da Vara Summit

Pico da Vara Summit is the highest mountain on São Miguel Island, standing at an altitude of 1,103 meters. This mountain is located in the Serra da Tronqueira, in the Nordeste area.

The surrounding area of the mountain includes the largest native Laurisilva forest on the island, which is home to endangered endemic bird species such as the Priolo, a bird you can also spot in nearby locations like the Priolo Environmental Center or Ribeira dos Caldeirões Natural Park.

To reach Pico da Vara, you'll need to hike the PR07 SMI Trail, a challenging 7 km circular trail, which requires a certain level of skill and physical preparation. If you're up for this 3-hour hike, pay close attention to the trail recommendations as there are several aspects you should consider before deciding to embark on it.

If you choose to tackle the PR07 SMI Trail, an interesting route as it allows access to the highest point on São Miguel Island, it starts right at this exact point, at the Forest Guard House of the Atalhada Reserve in Santo António Nordestinho. It traverses the protected area for Habitat and Species Management of Tronqueira e Planalto de Graminhais, as well as the Pico da Vara Natural Reserve. As you can see, it's an area under significant protection.

Given that this route is classified as difficult, you'll need to fill out a form beforehand to gain access. You can find the form on the trail description, where we also recommend reviewing the trail information.

As of early 2024, the only authorized access on the trail to Pico da Vara is the Santo António Nordestinho - Pico da Vara section (round trip). The sections of Algarvia and Graminhais are off-limits due to safety reasons, as forest exploration work is ongoing.
