4. Termas das caldeiras Hot Springs
The Termas das Caldeiras is a thermal complex on São Miguel Island. They're located in the town of Ribeira Grande, one of the island's most important towns. These thermal springs emerge from the earth with warm, mineral-rich waters, at a temperature of about 39°C.
While they may not be the most visited thermal waters by tourists, some locals claim they're the best on São Miguel, so it's highly likely you'll encounter locals if you decide to visit.
The waters of the hot springs contain minerals beneficial for the skin and health, making them a true oasis of well-being. In fact, they're renowned for their therapeutic properties for the skin and relaxation. In addition to these benefits, the architecture of the hot springs can transport you to the past. Their white facades date back to the 19th century. Combining these sensations with the Laurisilva forests and the scent of damp earth surrounding them makes for a truly unique personal care experience.
The Termas das Caldeiras complex is somewhat small, although well-equipped and offering amenities such as changing rooms and showers. Plus, the entrance fee is affordable (€4). These hot springs are perfect if you want to enjoy a more local, historical, and peaceful experience.
They're perfectly combinable with a visit to Caldeira Velha and Salto do Cabrito, places that are nearby and also offer thermal and aquatic experiences. In fact, one of the most recommended trails on the island, the PRC29 SMI Trail, starts from the Termas das Caldeiras parking lot and leads to Salto do Cabrito.
Termas das Caldeiras are easily accessible by car, and there's parking right in front. In case it's full, there are several other places to park nearby.
